Corticosteroid Injections
In some cases, injections may be used to temporarily reduce inflammation and pain, although they don’t heal the ACL.
ACL Reconstruction Surgery (Arthroscopic)
A minimally invasive procedure where the torn ACL is replaced with a graft (usually from the patient’s own tissue or from a donor) to restore knee stability.
Autograft ACL Reconstruction
A type of ACL reconstruction where the graft is taken from the patient’s own body, commonly from the patellar tendon, hamstring tendon, or quadriceps tendon.
Allograft ACL Reconstruction
In this surgery, a graft from a donor (cadaver) is used to replace the torn ACL, often recommended for less active or older patients.

Frequently asked questions
When Should I Visit An Orthopaedic Specialist For My ACL Tear?
Consider visiting an orthopaedic ACL specialist if you experience any of the following:
- Persistent Knee Pain: If your knee pain continues for more than a few weeks, despite rest and over-the-counter treatments, it’s time to seek professional help.
- Swelling or Inflammation: Noticeable swelling, redness, or warmth around the knee joint that doesn’t go away may indicate a serious issue.
- Limited Mobility or Stiffness: Difficulty bending, straightening, or putting weight on your knee should prompt you to consult a specialist to prevent further injury.
- Instability or Buckling: If your knee feels unstable or buckles under pressure, this could be a sign of ligament damage that needs immediate evaluation.
Do I need surgery for my ACL condition?
Not all ACL injuries require surgery. Non-surgical treatments such as physical therapy, medication, or injections may be sufficient for some patients. However, surgery may be recommended if non-surgical options don’t provide relief or if the tear is severe.
If your symptoms are worsening, it’s crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
What can I expect during my initial consultation with an orthopaedic specialist?
During your first visit with an orthopaedic ACL specialist, you can expect:
- Symptom Discussion: The specialist will inquire about your knee pain, any recent injuries, and how your daily activities are impacted.
- Physical Examination: They will evaluate your knee’s range of motion, strength, and check for any signs of swelling or tenderness.
- Medical History Review: You’ll go over your past medical history, including previous injuries or surgeries, and any medications you’re currently taking.
- Diagnostic Tests: The specialist may order imaging tests, such as X-rays or an MRI, for a clearer understanding of your condition. These tests may not be done immediately but may be scheduled for a later visit.
- Treatment Discussion: Your specialist may discuss initial treatment options. A comprehensive plan will likely be developed after reviewing the diagnostic test results during a follow-up visit.
