Frequently asked questions

When Should I Visit An Orthopaedic Knee Specialist?

You should consider visiting an orthopedic knee specialist if you experience any of the following:

  1. Persistent Knee Pain: If knee pain lasts for more than a few weeks, despite rest and over-the-counter treatments, it’s time to seek professional advice.
  2. Swelling or Inflammation: Noticeable swelling, redness, or warmth around the knee joint that doesn’t subside could indicate a serious underlying condition.
  3. Limited Mobility or Stiffness: If you find it difficult to bend, straighten, or bear weight on your knee, it’s important to consult a specialist to prevent further damage.
  4. Instability or Buckling: If your knee feels like it’s giving way or buckling under pressure, this could be a sign of ligament or structural issues that need medical evaluation.
Do I need surgery for my knee condition?

Your knee condition may be treated with non-surgical methods like medication, or injections.  Your orthopaedic knee specialist may consider surgery if non-surgical options don’t work for you.

If your knee symptoms have been persistent & worsening, it is highly advisable that you seek medical attention immediately.

What can I expect during my initial consultation with an orthopaedic knee surgeon?

During your initial consultation with an orthopaedic knee surgeon, you can expect the following:

  1. Discussion of Symptoms: The surgeon will ask about your knee pain, any injuries, and how it affects your daily activities.
  2. Physical Examination: They’ll check your knee’s range of motion, strength, and any signs of swelling or tenderness.
  3. Medical History Review: You’ll discuss your medical history, including past injuries or surgeries, and any medications you’re taking.
  4. Diagnostic Tests: Your surgeon might order X-rays or an MRI for further investigation. These tests may not be done during the initial consultation. Instead, you’ll likely be referred for these tests, and the results will be reviewed in a follow-up visit.
  5. Treatment Options: Your surgeon may discuss potential treatment options during the initial consultation, but a detailed treatment plan might require reviewing the results of any diagnostic tests first in a follow-up appointment.
