What is the cause of my SLAP Tear?

A SLAP tear occurs when the superior part of the labrum (the cartilage that stabilizes your shoulder joint) is damaged. This type of injury can result from several factors, including:

  • Repetitive overhead motions: Activities that involve frequent overhead movements, such as throwing, swimming, or weightlifting, can put significant strain on the shoulder joint and lead to a SLAP tear.
  • Sudden trauma or injury: A direct blow to the shoulder, a fall onto an outstretched arm, or a sudden pull on the arm (like catching a heavy object) can cause the labrum to tear.
  • Degenerative changes: Over time, the labrum may weaken due to normal wear and tear, especially in individuals over 40. This makes it more susceptible to tearing, even with minor stress.
  • Improper shoulder mechanics: Poor posture or improper shoulder movement patterns can increase stress on the labrum, eventually leading to damage.
  • Dislocations or subluxations: Shoulder instability, including partial or complete dislocations, can contribute to labral injuries like SLAP tears.

FAQs About SLAP Tears

Can SLAP tears heal on their own?

Minor SLAP tears may improve with rest and conservative treatments. However, more severe tears often require medical intervention. If your shoulder pain or instability persists for more than a few weeks or worsens, consult a SLAP tear specialist for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Is it normal to feel shoulder pain after exercise?

Mild shoulder discomfort after exercise is common, especially if the shoulder muscles were overworked. However, sharp or persistent pain, particularly during overhead or rotational movements, could indicate a SLAP tear or other shoulder injury. If you experience these symptoms, it’s important to seek medical advice.

Are there non-surgical options for treating SLAP tears?

Yes, many SLAP tears can be managed without surgery. Non-surgical treatments include physical therapy to strengthen the shoulder, anti-inflammatory medications for pain relief, and corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation. Surgery is typically recommended only if these treatments fail to alleviate symptoms.

How long is the recovery time if surgery is needed for a SLAP tear?

Recovery from SLAP tear surgery, such as arthroscopic repair, generally takes several months. The exact timeline depends on the severity of the tear and the procedure performed. A structured rehabilitation program, including physical therapy, is essential for regaining full shoulder strength and mobility.

If you’re experiencing persistent shoulder pain or weakness, contact Dr. Dennis Ng for a comprehensive evaluation and tailored treatment plan.
